ABOUT THE LAB

The Laboratory of Applied Biology (LAB) was started in 1975 at St Joseph's College, Bangalore. The LAB was then one of the 18 laboratories recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, India for plant tissue culture work. In 1980, the LAB was transferred to St Aloysius College, Mangalore where it is now located in a spacious new premises in the Gonzaga Block.

The LAB uses tissue culture techniques for large-scale multiplication of some economically important, endangered, ornamental and medicinal plants. The newly started molecular biology section focuses on assessing the genetic diversity using molecular markers.

The Laboratory of Applied Biology is recognized by the Department of BioSciences, Mangalore University for Ph.D. work under the guidance of Dr Fr. Leo D'Souza.

Till date, researchers at the LAB have published 54 papers and articles in international journals and books.
