ALUMNI - Ph.D. HOLDERS FROM THE LAB

The Laboratory of Applied Biology is recognized by the Department of BioSciences, Mangalore University for Ph.D. work under the guidance of Dr Fr. Leo D'Souza. Till date, the LAB has produced 6 Ph.Ds.

Icy D'Silva worked on micropropagation of Anacardium occidentale and Ailanthus malabarica. She got her Ph.D degree in 1990 and is presently working at the University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada.

Kavitha Kulkarni was awarded a Doctoral degree in 1993 for her work on micropropagation of Butea monosperma and Artocarpus incisus. She is a lecturer in Pune, India.

Smitha Hegde nee Mallya was conferred a doctorate in 1998 for her thesis entitled 'Propagation of some native ornamental plants using biotechnology'. She worked on an epiphytic fern, Drynaria quercofolia and and an avenue tree, Millingtonia hortensis. She presented her work on Drynaria at the International Pteridophyte Symposium at RBG, Kew in 1995 and at University of Surrey, Guildford, 2001. She is now a lecturer in the Post Graduate Department of Biotechnology, St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

Alice Clare Augustine worked on Gnetum ula and Curculigo orchioides. She presented her work on Gnetum at the Third International Symposium on in vitro culture and Horticultural Breeding at Jerusalem, Israel in 1996. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in 1998 and is currently employed with Monsanto, Bangalore.

Rajendra K. obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2001 for work on tissue culture of Ayurvedic medicinal plants-Murraya koenigii and Vernonia cinerea. He has presented his work on medicinal plants at a symposium on Agri-biotechnology held at Singapore in 2000. He is a professor at the Department of Botany, St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

Vinitha Cardoza was awarded a doctorate in 2001 for work on in vitro studies of cashew with regard to tolerance to abiotic stress and somatic embryogenesis from mature tissues. She has presented her work at a symposium organised by the SIVB at San Diego, California, 2000. She is presently a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Tennessee, USA.
