The St Aloysius College, 127 year old, is a catholic religious minority institution administered by the Jesuit Fathers of the Society of Jesus (popularly known as Jesuits) who are internationally recognized for the quality of education they impart. They have their own universities abroad and several schools and colleges in India. The College in Mangalore was started by them in 1880 in response to several appeals by the local leaders.

St Aloysius College was affiliated to the University of Madras in 1883, later to the Dharwar university for a year, then to Mysore University and finally to Mangalore University.

The campus is spread over 38 acres of hilly land with a large number of trees. The Administrative block, the newly constructed Xavier block for science, the newly constructed Information Technology building and the Auditorium along with a bi-directional open air stagecontain every possible facility for the student.
The chapel (a small church) on the campus is known all over the world for Br Moschini’s superb frescoes paintings and is a major tourist attraction.

Apart from undergraduate degree programmes in Arts, Science, Commerce, Business Management, Social Work and Computer Science, the College offers post graduate degree and diploma programmes in Computers, Bio-technology, Business Management and Social Work and is planning to offer many more courses next year. Research programmes include the fields of Applied Biology, Neural Networks, Bio-informatics and Fuzzy Logic.
